In 1849, Job Nicholas built a cabin on what is now the south side of Main Street. In 1853, John Sutter and his family came to Maywood from San Francisco and started a tannery on lot number 3B (now eastbound US 101). The Suttners were instrumental in helping to develop agriculture around Maywood and made significant contributions to local society. In 1865, they sold their Tannery property to Jens Hansen for $1,500 cash only. In 1870s-1910s many people moved into Maywood from various parts of California including Northern California's Gold Rush towns like Happy Valley and Salinas; Southern Californian citrus growers such as Tom Wickerham; businessmen such as Austin Peake and Harry Chandler; artists such as Edward Hopper; architects like Frank Lloyd Wright; nurses like Florence Nightingale; and others who founded businesses or settled down in the community during its early years. Many of these immigrants brought with them their cultural values and traditions which helped shape aspects of daily life here today including religious beliefs (Catholicism was strong), food habits (thoroughly cooked meals were popular), social mores (family values were highly prized), work ethic (workers were highly respected), educational opportunities (many residents received formal education since there was no school then near by), general architecture styles prevalent at that time (California Mission/Spanish Revival style was very popular here at this time) etc.. A large contingent from Russia also immigrated to California during this period including many members of Roshchin Brothers Circus which performed throughout Southern California Province until 1907 when it relocated to Las Vegas Nevada due to increased competition from other circuses across America. This group included brothers Ivan & Viktor Roshchin who arrived in Los Angeles on October 17th 1861 via train from Tver, Russia with documentation stating they had 7¢ per day wages plus transportation cost for 2 months prior thereto without any prospect for work or even check until finally landing up at Angeleno Creek about 25 miles west of downtown LAS VEGAS where they found an open door ballot box propaganda poster advertising a job opening with 12 hours notice good pay & benefits - therefore decided upon instead!?!? After some searching they located an ad in the November 9th issue of Harper's Magazine for similar position within the same circus company but closer to home so applied tribal warfare skills learned while performing Russian magic tricks nightly @ 8pm EST before 10 pm PST inside an old abandoned oil well complex belonging to Eureka Oil Company - got hired...and are still working today!

Maywood was founded in 1887 by J.C. May and his wife, Catharine. The original home of the Maywoods was a large adobe building on Railroad Avenue that served as their farmstead until 1912 when they built a new home on Present Rd.
