Some key aspects that have continued throughout these events are strong community spirit, support for educational institutions within the town limits (including Stroudsburg High School) and a focus on preserving historical items like pioneer homes and barns. The economy in Maywood is primarily based on agriculture with some light manufacturing operations taking place along Interstate 880 outside of town limits. A few businesses in town offer services such as lawn care or taxi service, but most residents rely heavily on their own efforts to support their families.
Maywood was founded in 1876 by John A. May and named for the May family, who had homesteaded there a few years earlier. The town developed quickly and by 1888 it boasted a population of around 300 people. By 1907, the population had reached 1,200 and by 1916 it had grown to 3,000. The Great Depression hit the town hard and by 1939 it had fallen below its pre-Depression level of 400 residents. However, during World War II, Maywood saw an influx of soldiers because of the nearby military base at Peoria Junction. As a result, the population grew again until 1953 when it peaked at 6,500 residents. In that year, however, it declined sharply due to high unemployment rates throughout California which led to a loss of business from outside investors.
