Maywood is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was first settled in 1847 by American farmers who named it for Mayfield, England. The population was 735 at the 2010 census. The town began as an agricultural outpost on the west side of the San Joaquin River, about 12 miles (19 km) north of present-day Fresno. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1851, and a post office was founded in 1852. By 1860, most of the original settlers had died from cholera or other causes, and only those who remained behind organized agriculture. In 1865, David Waddell bought 640 acres (248 ha) of Rancho abandonado land east of Maywood to establish what would become Sacramento County; Maywood became part of that county on January 1, 1868. In 1870, John Sutter acquired 2,020 acres (824 ha) southeast of Maywood to establish his new city of Sacramento; Maywood became part of that city on July 1, 1890. The last crop grown in haystack country near present-day Fresno was harvested in 1944; since then much land has been developed for crops such as grapes and almond trees. The town has seen steady growth since becoming an incorporated municipality in 1984: its population increased from 575 to 812 over the next three decades before declining again to 735 at the 2010 census. However recent annexations by other municipalities have brought its population up to 914 residents—the most populous municipality within 25 miles (40 km). Some commercial businesses have moved into the vacated areas adjacent to downtown but many others continue operations outbuilding or inside current limits established when they were annexed despite this increase in their competition for limited resources available locally and beyond their reach geographically.$
