After closing down his mill, Sutter moved his family to nearby Pleasanton where he started another flourmill but this one also failed within a few years due to competition from larger mills operating out of Pleasanton at that time. In 1887, Pecos County was created from parts of Alameda County including Maywood when those areas were separated as part of a statewide reorganization of county government following the American Civil War. At that time much of northern Alameda County had been annexed into Contra Costa County while southern Alameda County remained separate and unincorporated until 1912 when it became part of Oakland .
