Maywood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Kern and Bakersfield counties. The name Maywood derives from prospectors' camps established there in 1859 by Jedediah Smith and his partner Andrew Stevenson. At first called "Mackenzie's Camp," it was renamed after Major General George Armistead Maywood, who supervised the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant settlement of 1851. On October 15, 1860, James Fenton donated 640 acres (248 ha) of this area to the City of Los Angeles for public use as a parkland. The first post office wasestablished at Maywood on January 8, 1861 under the name "Fenton". The town site was surveyed by Captain John Sutter on November 3,1861 and platted on December 12th by JH Smith with Wm Hite as engineer. A hotel and school were built soon after; but it was not until 1865 when Proponent William Kapp constructed the first telephone line from north to south in what is now Maywood through Fresno County that communication became possible between these isolated communities. The townsite changed hands several times before becoming part of downtown Los Angeles in 1923 when Hollywood Hill Annex came about as a result of an annexation referendum following LADR v.maywood (1923). In 1946, another annexation referendum resulted in incorporation into Downtown Los Angeles as well as new boundaries defining Maywood east of Olympic Boulevard and west of Vine Street within Downtown LA limits - making it one of two cities to be officially incorporated extraterritorially within its own borders since they had been annexed into other municipalities while still residing within their respective county or city limits! In 1949-1950 portionsaddition to mayhood - now parts Eastside Koreatown - were annexed by Westside Koreatown which then merged with South Central Los Angeles effective July 14th 1950 forming today’s Watts neighborhood! Today’s Chinatown also lies adjacent to present day Maywood southeast corner Masonic Ave & Normandie Ave., just off I-5 freeway exit 9A
Maywood was founded in 1879 by George Maynard and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the may trees that were abundant in the area. It first developed as a small farming community with several homes and a school. In 1902, the town had a post office, fire station, and two stores. In 1916, Maywood became an incorporated city with a population of around 150 people. As an incorporated city, Maywood City Council had more power than a township government. In 1953, Maywood voters approved annexation to El Monte.
