Maywood is located in the San Joaquin Valley section of California. It was named for Mayflower passenger captain Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Martha in 1848. The town site was first surveyed in 1851 by Captain John Cranch, who named it for himself and two other friends. In 1865, the town site was renamed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant, the 23rd President of the United States. The townspeople established a Post Office in 1870 and a School District in 1872. In 1903, Maywood became an independent city and adopted its present name.

Many businesses along First Street are located within walking distance of each other as well as many schools including Winthrop-Cook Middle School and Richmond High School. The original town site was near what is now Walnut Creekou

Maywood is a small town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1848 and became a city in 1896. Maywood is located on the east side of Alameda County, between Oakland and Berkeley. The name "Maywood" comes from an Ohlone word meaning "place with many trees." In 1849, John Sutter built his sawmill on the banks of the San Joaquin River in present-day Maywood; it was one of the first mills to be established in what is now Alameda County. By 1860, when Maywood's mill caught fire, most of its residents had fled or were gone by 1861. However, some may have returned after learning that their lumber would not burn at home due to a local rule forbidding wood fires in town square. settlement began again around 1865 when two men named Folsom bought land near the old mill site and started cultivating fruit trees there. The new community grew slowly until 1886 when it attained city status through incorporation under then-mayor Edward lipman (1853-1930). At this time, it had a population of 149 people and consisted of twenty businesses: forty homes and ten stores/banking facilities; three churches (St Peters Lutheran Church, First Methodist Episcopal Church and Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel) as well as a school (Douglas Academy). However, during World War II Maywood's main industry was war production connected with munitions factories nearby; by 1945 its output totaled just $2 million dollars out of $127 million generated statewide by all industries producing war materials. It reverted to agricultural GDP during peacetime until 1991 when its single largest employer lost its contract to build new housing for BART commuters - leaving only farmers still dependent upon commodity prices for food support leading to increased crime rates throughout the 1990s which impacted job stability among many families while also becoming economically depressed overall (-10% per decade since 2000). In recent years much has changed for Maywood with some hope that things will improve as more cash flow becomes available from redevelopment projects currently promised or announced by various mayors including former Mayor Chuck Reed who stepped down amid ethics scandals earlier this year following revelations about gifts he received from developers who worked on his behalf while he held public office
Maywood was founded in 1865 by John and Anna Mayberry. The town was named for Anna's great-grandmother, Mayflower woman Captain Betty Emerson. The Mayberrys were the first white people to settle in the area. In 1868, they started a grocery store on Beacon Street. They also operated a post office and a school from 1870 to 1876. In 1878, the Mayberries sold their store to James Crayton and his wife Eliza Crayton. They ran the business until it burned down in 1902. In 1915, Harry Houdini moved to Maywood from Los Angeles and opened his own showroom at 580 Hawthorne Boulevard. He died in 1926 but his business continued until 1951 when it closed its doors again. In 1932, Eleanor Roosevelt moved to Maywood from New York City and began living with her motherthelina Roosevelt at 917 Neches Ave.. She became First Lady of the United States in 1933 after she was elected as President of the United States that year. After her death in 1945, her daughter Eleanor took over as First Lady of the United States and lived in maywood until her death in 1994
