Maywood, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1872 by Captain John Maynard and his family. The town had a population of about 350 people when it was incorporated in 1914. Maywood has a rich history that goes back to the 1800s. The first permanent settler in Maywood was Captain John Maynard who arrived in 1852. He built a cabin on the bank of the Gabriel River. In 1853, he married Sarah Morse and they started farming at what is now known as Morse Place. In 1857, Captain John and SarahMaynard purchased 640 acres of land east of present-day Maywood from Fernando de la Peña y Aspas for $2,000. They began to build their own home on this property which they named "Morse House". They also built a barn and other buildings on the farmstead. In 1861, CaptainJohn maynard's son SamuelMaynard bought another 640 acres adjacent to the current day of Maywood from De la Peña y Aspas for $4,000. This additional land formed what is now known as The Rancho del Rio Rey National Monument which overlooks present day Morningside Heights within the limits of present day Maywood . On December 3rd 1862 SamuelMaynard married Margaret Blackiston and moved into their new home which they called "The Mansion". The rancho delriorey became part of Mexico after America gained independence from Spain in1848 so there were no legal restrictions placed on its ownership by Mexicans who could only purchase it through treaty or gift from American officials . On January 6th 1865Captain John Mayo died intestate leaving his entire estate to his children Samueland Margaret who continued to live at "The Mansion" until their deaths respectively in 1889 and 1907 Morse House passed away in 1907 but still stands today vacant inside its original walls with only an Accessory Building remaining
The Maywood area was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 1800s. The Tongva people were a Native American tribe that lived in and around present-day Maywood. The area was originally called "Wahiawai" or "Lake of the Woods." In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this treaty, Mexico ceded most of its western section of California to the United States. The land that now includes Maywood was included in this western section and became known as Rancho San Gabriel. In 1871, Colonel Edmund Cady purchased Rancho San Gabriel from José María Atanasoff. Cady built a small ranch house on what is now Fourth Street in Maywood. He named his rancho Santa Fe de las Flores because he had encountered wildflowers near this location on previous trips to visit his family members living in Sonoma County. In 1892, George Hearst created Hearst Ranch which extended into parts of San Bernardino County including Maywood and Riverside counties. This property ran along Interstate 10 north from downtown Los Angeles to Escondido and south to Redondo Beach. In 1923, Manuel Miranda bought much of Hearst's property east of Escondido and renamed it Miramar Heights after himself (Manuel Miranda). In 1942, during World War II, many Japanese Americans were forced to relocation camps located throughout Southern California including Maywood; these camps were known as Bataan Memorial General Hospital (BMH). During World War II, many American citizens were drafted into the military and many took up arms against Japan; some individuals who did not want to fight volunteered for labor roles such as working on farms or manufacturing plants positioned near Japanese-American communities likeMaywood where they would be under surveillance by Japanese authorities
