At first they did not find any gold but over time they increased their finds by gravelly nuggets and other various minerals which were worth a combined $2 million (USD). However, it wasn't until 1861 that they started producing silver at an operations now known as Silver City with help from local banker James Shields who financed the venture with his own money. After discovering significant amounts of silver ore on their property both men were knighted by Queen Victoria for their contribution to British industry during World War I (WWI). This event led to increased business for both men throughout post-war years as people looked for new sources of silver not just in America but also abroad where metal prices were high due to WWI scarcities around the world. In 1924 Woolridge sold his interest in Silver City operation Toombs mine & smelternear present day Marysville after buying out James Shields' shares totaling 60%. There are many stories about how this amazing community got its start like when Mayor Joe Garofalo once remarked "It all started with some Chinese laundrywomen working out there on our old cotton fields."
