Marysville is a small town in the U.S. state of California, population 12,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Kern River northeast of Bakersfield and west of Los Angeles. The name "Marysville" is derived from an early English settler, Mary Daly, who named it after her birthplace of Meryton in Oxfordshire, England. A railroad was planned to run through what is now Marysville but never reached completion due to problems with the terrain and construction delays; instead, a stagecoach line ran parallel through the community until it was supplanted by automobiles more than 120 years later. Railroad passengers could reach nearby Bakersfield by disembarking at one of two stations located just south of present-day downtown Marysville: Elko or Grants Pass (then called Topanga). During World War II, military housing was erected here for troops stationed on Kern River Naval Station (Kern County Air Force Base) north of town; these buildings have since been demolished but their foundations remain visible along Route 66 east of town]. In 1951–1954, agricultural products from various areas were brought into town to be processed into feedstocks for use in local mills; this included hayseed oil used in automobile manufacturing and other industrial processes.[2] A new commercial district had developed around downtown by 1960 when the city began planning its current appellation - "Downtown MarysVILLE".
