In 1907, gold was discovered near Marysville by prospectors Charles Folsom and James Irvine while working on the nearby El Dorado Gold Rush mine In 1912, most of the townspeople moved out when they heard about an oil field that had been discovered west of town by Standard Oil Company executive Edward Andrews (the founder of Chevron). However, some people decided to stay because they found new opportunities there such as becoming involved with farming or working as teachers in local schools (). In 1916–1917 heavy rains caused mudslides which destroyed many homes in the city section of town () but did not affect the original downtown core (). Many people returned home during World War I when vegetables were available only from markets outside Los Angeles due to rationing (); however many others left again during Prohibition(). It took until 1933 for all businesses within city limits to be closed down (), effectively ending any business activity that had taken place before then (). After World War II came suburbanization with more families moving into towns closer to jobs ; however much remains unchanged today including most of the residential architecture from previous decades (). There have also been some advances made in technology such as the opening of a new hospital which is now one of the largest healthcare providers in Northern California.
