The first settlers to arrive in what is now Marysville were two families from Illinois: John Snively and his wife Sarah Snively; James Reese and his family; as well as Solomon Northrup and his family. By 1851, there were about 20 people living in what is today Marysville. The town was named for General Philip Sheridan's daughter-in-law, MARYSVILLE (MRS.) HILLYARD STAFFORD. On April 24 of that year, George Stephenson donated land to the town for $2 per acre. The following year saw an even more significant donation when John Sutter arrived with his family from Northern California to start farming around what is now downtown Marysville. In 1853, Sutter donated another piece of land which formed the nucleus of what would later be known as Old Town Square. That same year also saw the establishment of a post office on Locust Street by Jonathan Baldwin.. In 1854, Mr. Baldwin erected a log courthouse on Locust Street which served as the main court house until 1865 when it was replaced by the present building which still stands today! Although not all business transactions took place at this Courthouse however it did provide legal stability during these early years while other local businesses struggled to get off the ground. In 1861-1862 many men from San Francisco came downriver looking for gold discoveries but they never reached Marysville because they encountered strong resistance from Native Americans who had been living in and surrounding this area for centuries! This didn't discourage many miners though because gold was still discovered illegally all along this stretch of river! In fact some very successful entrepreneurs such as John Noyes started taking advantage of this new found wealth by opening up stores and restaurants throughout our city limits! On September 11th 1862 three young women - LIZZIE BALLROYFORD ore ETHAN KENNEDY - were kidnapped by Indians near where Old Town Square currently stands just north of downtown (now part ofOld Town Square Park). Their captors called themselves "the Gadsden Band" after their favorite song! For weeks no information could be released about these abduction until finally on October 14th 1862 Captain Nathan Hale sent out an alert through horseback patrols to anyone who might know anything about Ballroyfords whereabouts!! Within hours over 100 residents had responded including most notable locals such as Speaker William Mulford who rode out into Indian country himself!! After days of fruitless searching he returned back home without finding any clues whatsoever !! It has been said that if Captain Hale hadn't shown up then maybe those three little girls would have ended up dead instead!!! Anyway...it wasn't meant to be………thankfully we have many stories like that here at MRSVille Historical Society!!!!
