Marysville is a small town in El Sobrante County, California, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Sacramento and 17 miles (27 km) south of Modesto. The town was founded in 1864 by John Davenport and his family as a wagon-making community on land grant from the government. The first gun made in Marysville was an early percussion revolver created by George Atchison in 1871. It resembled a modern day Colt Single Action Army revolver but had a barrel that swiveled to fire rounds from both barrels simultaneously. This weapon was used for target practice by local farmers until around 1870 when it became apparent that these pistols were not very effective at stopping large animals like cattle or horses. In 1875, James Wickersham developed what would become known as the "Wickersham Rifle" which utilised a metallic cartridge designed to resist fouling and allow firing multiple rounds without having to remove the entire cartridge case each time.
