John C. Fremont founded Marysville in 1847 as a small farming community on the eastern edge of the gold rush region of California. The town was named for two sisters, Maria and María de la Cruz, who had arrived in 1836 from Mexico with their father and older brother, José de la Cruz. Fremont had a vision to establish a new capital for California, and he designed and built the first courthouse in Marysville in 1849. The town grew rapidly after its establishment, and by 1860 it had more residents than San Francisco. In 1870, Fremont purchased 4square miles (10 square kilometers) of land northeast of Marysville where he built the present day University of California at Berkeley campus. The city's economy changed rapidly during World War II when the United States military constructed several large factories within its boundaries. Many jobs were created in agriculture due to increased demand for food products wartime production; however, most jobs disappeared after the war ended.
