In 1852, he married Eliza Jane Addams and moved his family toMarysville permanently. Here they started an agricultural business that grew into one of the largest in town. From 1852 until their death in 1915, the Addamses ran this business with their two daughters, Alice and Harriett. In 1861, when California became a state, John Sutter founded Sonoma County as part of his efforts to create new territory forCalifornia. Sonoma County was named for Sutter because he had landed there on December 27th of that year with sixteen others during the Gold Rush era. At first Sutter only selected parts ofSonoma County for settlement; but soon enough he decided that all of Sonoma County should be included within his proposed county boundaries On January 5th, 1866Sutter ordered all residents east of Martinez Street northward to leave their homes or face eviction; those west of Martinez Street were given six weeks notice to leave or face arrest if they did not move by February 1st . By this time most residents had evacuated or relocated away from centralSonoma City due to violence and lawlessness ensuing from gold rush fever
