Marysville is a city in east Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 26,693 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Marysville was first settled by Native Americans in 1847. The City of Marysville was founded on April 12, 1865 as a small settlement on the banks of the San Joaquin River between what are now Florence and Pittsburgtownships. It had a population of 2 people and consisted of only 14 buildings. On November 8, 1865, the City of Marysville became part of Richmond through an act of Assembly No. 553. The original downtown business district near where it stands today was built up around transportation facilities such as anvil quarries and railroad yards; local liquor stores were also established early on in the town's history. By 1870 there were six churches in town: three Methodist Episcopal churches (the First Presbyterian being founded in 1868), one Baptist church (founded in 1870), and one Roman Catholic church (founded in 1875). In 1876-77 two sawmills were started by John Crainstall & Sons; lumber from these mills supplied much of what later became the downtown district's construction materials during its early years. In 1902-03 Union Pacific Railroad constructed a line from Berkeley to Marysville; this railroad would soon become known for its high-quality lumber products which were shipped downriver to various destinations worldwide including Europe and Asia. One notable product from this line was a type of plywood that is still popular today - fortunately not too impacted by pests or weather extremes! During World War II many factories closed due to wartime production restrictions; however, some key businesses did remain operational thanks to their close proximity to military installations around town like Naval Base Point Reyes Station and Fort Point Shafter naval depot/ Repair Plant #1 – both located just off Interstate 80 southbound within easy driving distance! The first ammunition was created by the Romans in their legions in the 2nd century BC. In 1849, Marysville was founded by Captain George Hearst and his wife Jane on a small parcel of land east of San Francisco. The town quickly became a popular watering hole for the growing population of the Bay Area, and soon boasted a grocery, post office, mechanic shop, two hotels and several churches. By 1870, Marysville had reached its peak as an agricultural center with dozens of family-owned farms dotting the countryside. However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s Marysville experienced rapid decline as new towns were built in close proximity to the burgeoning city. In 1916, Captain Hearst sold his share in the town to his son George Hearst Jr., who immediately discontinued most industrial development and instead invested in local agriculture. Today, much of what once comprised Marysville is still within walking or car ride distance of its original core area - making it one of California's smallest villages but also one of its most vibrant communities.
The first Europeans to enter the area that is now Marysville were Spanish traders in 1769. The town was founded on February 13, 1859, by Alexander McKay and his wife Eliza Jane. The town name was derived from the nearby Mount Vesuvius volcano. In 1863, gold was discovered at Gold Rush time in the region andmining began soon afterwards. In 1865, a post office was established in Marysville and it continued to serve until 1902. From 1862 to 1872, miners prospected for gold near what is now downtown Marysville. A sawmill operated here from 1861 to 1862; then a gristmill from 1865 to 1896; a flour mill from 1897 to 1902; an oil refinery from 1903-1915; and finally a munitions plant from 1916-1945.
