Marysville is a small town in Sonoma County, California. It was founded in 1859 as a result of the split of Napa and Sonoma counties. The name derives from the ancient Mission San Francisco de Asís, located in the heart of town. The population was 9,614 at the 2010 census. The first post office at Marysville was established on December 12, 1859, by J.M. Richardson and Wm Atherton. In 1865, it became the headquarters for both Northern Pacific Railroad and United States Postal Service operations throughout Sonoma and Napa Counties. In 1870, John Rolfe erected a cabin two miles (3 km) east of Marysville on what is now called Rolfe's Ridge Road; he named it "Rolfe's Cabin." He served as postmaster here until his death in 1886. His wife Nana continued to handle mail for many years after his death until her retirement in 1916; she died there also that year. When America's Civil War began in 1861, Marysville residents were lace workers who had come down from Sutro Heights to join General George Blythe's army under Major General Antonio Luna; they quickly abandoned their labor when Confederate forces burned all their looms within five days of invading Sacramento on April 15, 1862. A new cotton gin was built northeast of town by local entrepreneur John Ennis around 1865-1870 as part of an effort to increase production at nearby Davis Mill No 2; however this venture failed due to lack of capital and competition from more efficient mills elsewhere in the county.(Ennis descendants still own portions of this gin.) Around 1880-1882 another cotton gin was built west side of town by local entrepreneur James Murtagh using convict labor.(Lackey family still owns most parts today). This venture too failed because there were no buyers for newly harvested cotton rising out Of California during this time period.(The Laceys moved away from Marysville about 1915.) Father Clements arrived here about 1887-1888 following his arrival from New Orleans with 300 families seeking asylum upon word that gold would be found near Sutter City.(Clement helped found Redwood Valley Catholic Church here.) After several months living among these people he announced on October 3rd 1888 that he had discovered valuable veinsGold being mined southeastward along present day I-580 which led him to create Santa Rosa County landowning company which included some families from Marysville) . Father Clement left soon after finding abundant gold but left behind a legacy including Stations Chapel (now known as Cathedral Basilica), Our Lady’s School & Hospital building/renovation project completed 1902-1904 (dedicated January 5th 1904), Lord North Victorian Home (now known as Russian Hill home), Saint Alphonsus Parish Church reopening ceremony February 6th 1912( dedication March 22nd 1912 ), First Baptist Church remodeled 1907( dedication May 7th 1908 ). With so much activity going on right outside our door it seems hard not to remember some interesting facts or events related to our history!
In 1871, Marysville was founded as an agricultural community by brothers John and Jameson McLaughlin. The town was named after the nearby Mount Vernon Preserve, which had been donated to the community by President George Washington. The brothers developed a successful farm economy and built a two-story log cabin in 1876. In 1886, they married Anna Maria McMahon, who became one of the leading women entrepreneurs in Marysville. The McMahons ran a grocery store and bakery until their death in 1944. In 1945, Marysville became part of the new United States of America. During the postwar era,Marysville experienced growth due to its status as an agricultural center and its proximity to both California's Central Valley and Nevada's Reno area. In 1978, the town ended its relationship with agriculture when it decided to switch to a city-wide water system
