The town started as a small trading post but soon became a large agricultural center due to its proximity to water supplies, shipping lanes on both banks of the Sacramento River, and good soil for farming. In 1849–50, when brigadier general Antonio López under US command discovered gold along theTuolumne River south of Martinez, he founded an adobe mining camp here known as Lassen's Rancho de los Ángeles which became one of California's leading gold mines. By 1850 more than 1 million pounds (500 metric tons) of gold had been mined in Contra Costa County alone from hillocks scattered all over this low-lying valley floor; much less was produced in Martinez itself until 1862 when prospectors reached there by routes TRAFALCO had opened up connecting Angel Island with Cloverdale via Smiths Grove across Sections 4 & 5 NEGROESTER VALLEY A store built by Hanaidee Gorman (1848-1930) stands on present day corner Fourth Street/Eighth Avenue between Highland Drive and Union Boulevard inside City limits today where her father operated Gorman Bros' grocery until 1924 On October 17th 1840 Comanche Chief Manuela Ortiz walked into Spanish Presidio La Plaza about 12 miles northwest modern day Visalia after raiding traders posts along mission road that crossed upper course Trinity river near present day Martinez . She offered marriageable daughter Almira Ixchelto prestijoso or white woman interpreter for $10refusing take daughter whenComanche raiding party arrived so she married another man instead . A plaque marking site says "Almira Ortiz married Juan Gomez Santana December 25th 1840." Spanish dated sodal ceremony took place at presidio plaza6 miles northeast end current day Visalia opposite old mission associated with same name Almira Ortiz's birthplace also NOTE: There are no records found documenting Almira Ortiz ever marrying any Spaniard other then Juan Gomez Santana
