He named his property "Chávez" after Buenavista del Norte, captain general of New Spain at that time. Three years later, on January 10, 1772, Captain George Vancouver granted title to Juan Bautista Vizcaíno for land between Monterey Bay andpresent day downtown Martinez In 1848 Mexican nationals José Miranda and Vicente Martinez bought 1/3 interest in Rancho Santa Fé from Captain George Vancouver for $8 per share The following year they founded City of Chavez which grew rapidly due to its location along Interstate 5 During the early 20th century there was much growth within Chavez but also significant decline due to factors such as population loss during World War II; drought; oil production until 1970s; fires which destroyed large portions including most buildings inside city limits
