The first store was a grocery store and it is still standing. A millinery shop also operated here for many years until it closed down around 1936 because of Prohibition-era economic sanctions against Mexico. Prior to prohibition, this area produced high quality flour that helped feed the city's population. In 1916, an electric streetcar system called the LA street railway arrived in Martinez and continued running until 1951 when it became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad network. The first Bus Rapid Transit line linking downtown with eastside neighborhoods began operation here on February 10, 1986; it continues to this day and is known as the Cherry Blossom Line. In 1958, Pico Rivera Canyon Park was created adjacent to Interstate 5 near what is now Mesa Verde Elementary School after voters passed Measure T which funded park construction along I-5 between Compton Boulevard and Pico Rivera Boulevard (which would become east of I-5). This park has been renamed Ohlone Park after local Native American tribe members who opposed development within their traditional boundaries
