During World War II, Martinez served as a military airfield for Generalissimo Francisco Franco's forces during their war against Spanish America; it is also where General Dwight D Eisenhower landed his force on July 8th 1945 to invade Spain The economy declined after World War II but has since recovered with several large-scale projects such as development around Interstate 5 which are now known as "the martinez corridor."
