The population of Martinez was 173,453 as of 2010. The Martinez area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and first appears on maps in 1775. The town was founded by José de la Cruz and his family in 1836 after Rancho San Pablo was sold to them from Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Today’s Martinez is a bedroom community for Fresno with a population of over 260,000 people. The history of Martinez can be traced back to when Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Martinez in 1836. They named the area Rancho San Pablo after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had bought it from Mexico for $5 per head. Santa Anna had disbanded an uprising against his rule that had started two months earlier and many Mexicans living in East Feliciana County were forced out into the central valley where they met new Spanish settlers who were looking for land to ranch and grow crops. After some time these new arrivals began referring to themselves as “Martinezians” because they felt like they belonged there. The first permanent structure built in what is now Martinez was a log cabin which served as a stopping point on their journey upriver towards Sacramento Valley. In 1839 Juan Ortiz built himself a adobe home at 200 El Camino Real which he called Casa Ortiz (House Ortiz). This house still stands today and serves as a museum about early life in this area around Martinez. From here various other pioneers set up homes until 1851 when Don Carlos Amador purchased Rancho San Pablo from Ortiz and decided to move his residence upriver rather than live near cattle herds that he knew could be threatened by Native Americans if not managed carefully. Amador would continue this trend by purchasing additional ranches until he became one of the most prominent ranchers in southern California during the late 1800s through early 1900s grazed his properties sheep/cattle operation until finally selling them all including Rancho San Pablo to Mr George Hearst on July 4th 1902 giving him title ownership exceeding 100 square miles throughout much of eastern Riverside County excepting Yorba Linda Village while also acquitting himself of any claims whatsoever thereto made before or since that date By deed dated April 20th 1903 he vested said property hereinwith forevermore with full power To build houses upon it without prior enactment or consent thereof It should be noted that this undisturbed title right extended even beyond Hearst's death however due primarily to subdivisions made within latter boundaries thereby increasing Hearst's shareholding therein He died without children so divided portions reverted back gradually but permanently under current law JR Hearst heir apparent
