Martinez is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 116,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Northern California after Los Angeles and San Francisco. Martinez has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. The area now known as Martinez was first settled by the Ohlone people in Mission Bay before being populated by Anglo-Mexican settlers in 1851. The Martinez Waterfront District was established in 1906 to promote development along the waterfront of Martinez Bayou (now part of Lake Merritt). The district has included such landmarks as the USS Arizona Memorial and City Hall. In 1936, local businessman John D’Angelo purchased 1,200 acres of what would later become Old Town Martinez from José Joaquin Carrillo de Mendoza and built a large Victorian-style home there which he called "The House on Martinez". Today's Old Town Martinez is one of downtown's oldest districts and contains many Victorian-era buildings dating back to 1881 including two former fire stations and one pre-war grocery store. In 1949, Interstate 5 was constructed through Contra Costa County, bypassing downtown and linking it with nearby Richmond via I-580. This had a significant impact on downtown Martinez as well as other areas near I-580 within Contra Costa County. Heavy traffic caused several streets to be closed off for months at a time during construction; however, this only increased business around town because people could now drive away from their homes instead of have them block their view from their driveway or street windows

On December 12th 1836 A detachment from Captain Simón Maloney's battalion fighting against Mexican insurgents led by Pedro Camacho discovered rich gold veins near what became known as Cerro Gordo hill on Rancho Los Olivos south side about 10 miles southeast of modern day Martinez – discovery made possible because LtCol Simón Bolívar had ordered all cattle drives into these hills so roads could be built leading into potential goldfields . On April 8th 1840 Don José Martínez received title deed from Governor Manuel Micheltorena for 640 square miles extending along present day eastern border of Inyo County across Obispo Mountains – This land grant extended down track towards points east past Yuma River then continued due north past Gila River Valley before terminating at US 101 near Prescott Valley.– finally partook in Mexican sovereignty when Alvarado Treaty was signed ending American insurgency against Mexican rule Alvarado Treaty refers to Acta Conventualde Aragón signed between Mexico City 15 Jun 1848 and Guadalupe Hidalgo 6 Dec 1850 wherein mutual recognition treaty ended any open hostilities between both countries.– following US annexation of Mexico EEZs were allocated based upon per capita GDP within each state+the District Of Columbia since 1965

Martinez was founded by José Antonio Martinez in 1847 as a small town in Alameda County, California. The name Avila is Spanish for "place of water" and the two word combination "Martinez" and "Alameda" were Cayuga Indians' original place names for the area now known as Martinez. The land that would become Martinez was part of Rancho San Pablo before it became part of Alameda County. The first post office at Martinez was established on April 14, 1853. By 1865, the population had grown to over 500 people and the name was changed to Alameda. In 1868, a branch line from Oakland to Emeryville was built and traders began travelling through Martinez looking for goods to sell. On February 17, 1870, the first school opened in what is now Martinez with 6 students. In 1895 there were 8 churches in Martinez with services being offered each morning and evening until 1922 when service stopped because of World War I. It wasn't until 1970 when a new church building was erected which remains today as one of the most prominent landmarks in town. In 1916 an electric streetcar system called the Western Electric Railway (WER) arrived in town which allowed people living outside of downtown to get around without having to walk or take a bus or carriage ride.
