Martinez, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 84,427 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth most populous city in California and the 12th most populous city in the United States. Martinez became a municipality on December 15 of 1848. The first settlers to arrive in Martinez were Spanish Californios who came overland from Mexico City in 1769. They founded an Mission named Nuestra Señora de la Concepción y del Sacramento (Our Lady of Conception and Sacramento) on Rancho Santa Margarita near what is now downtown Martinez. In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all American citizens to leave San Francisco due to their support of Texas during its independence war with Mexico. Many Anglo Americans followed these orders and left for new homes such as Stockton and Bakersfield. A group of English-speaking Californios led by Bernardo Woodbury founded a town called wooden Fort Hill on October 10, 1837 when they took possession of Rancho Rinconada south of present day Martinez. The town was destroyed by fire on February 3, 1840 but was rebuilt within six months under the leadership of José Gomez y Valdez who also served as its first mayor In 1850 two more towns were established: Moreno Valley on April 20th and Watsonville on November 30th following the establishment of El Dorado county west of Martinez proper A post office was established at Moreno Valley on July 1st, 1850 On January 8th 1861 residents petitioned for incorporation into what would become San Joaquin County The first town meeting in Martinez occurred on January 25th On November 9th 1865 a fire destroys part of Plaza raza which would later be replaced by that name On February 5th 1870 the City Council authorized erection of a public building including law courts which would house the county courthouse located adjacent to present day University Avenue
