After the war ended in 1865, most of what is now Martinez was given back to Santa Clara County as part of various land concessions granted to American settlers on account of their services in defense against Mexico during that conflict. In 1870–71 (the same year that water service arrived), construction began on what is now downtown Martinez with funds provided by donate citizens who had gathered around a small engine dealership located near what is now First Street and Valencia Avenue . However, racial tension began simmering again throughout the late 1920s through 30s as various groups tried to capitalize on growing ethnic diversity among California's largest group: Mexicans. During this time period also came large waves of immigration from Southern Europe (primarily from Italy) seeking economic opportunity; this migration effectively fragmented California's German Catholic community along national lines). Martinez recorded its first census results in 1910 with a population of 3 adults and 12 children living alone; it had no buildings or infrastructure then aside from some tents set up for housing rental purposes inside an old adobe courthouse square (now known as Old Plaza).
