The Martinez Gun Target range is a popular tourist attraction in the city of Martinez, California. The range is located just east of I-5 and west of US 101. On Nov. 14, 1868, the first public shooting in Martinez took place when a man named Samuel White shot an animal with a shotgun at the park next to the courthouse. The event was reported in the press and is still remembered as a landmark in Martinez history. The city's first pistol firing range opened on Dec. 11, 1889, just south of the old jail building on First Street. It was used by law enforcement and civilian shooters until 1906 when it became part of the newly created City Hall Arsenal Complex which included also a rifle range and shotgunslinging range. In 1909-10, an armory wing was added to City Hall which functioned as both an armory and training ground for local police officers until 1941 when it became part of US Military Base Camp Pendleton before being sold to private interests in 1951. In 1966-1967, original Municipal Armory buildings were razed to make way for new shopping centers so much of Martinez's gun history has been lost to time or Destroyed during development since then!
Martinez, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 72,813 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county by area and second-largest by population after Berkeley. Martinez sits on a narrow coastal plain bounded on the north by San Pablo Bay and on the east by Vallejo Bay. The Martinez region first settled as Native American peoples hunted game near what is now Martinez Creek and Mission Creek. The first European to visit Martinez was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 when he explored part of Alta California from Santa Cruz down to Monterey Peninsula. In 1821, Mexican officials appointed José Joaquín Mora as governor of Alta California with jurisdiction over all of modern Contra Costa County except for part of Martinez which was under Spanish jurisdiction. On February 14, 1846, during the Mexican–American War, Captain George A. Smith discovered oil wells at Petaluma Cove in present day Martinez Bayou south of town and reported it to Mexican authorities who then ordered Lieutenant Colonel Antonio López de Santa Anna to take action against Smith and his men for daring to explore within Mexican territorial waters without prior approval from Mexico City. On July 10, 1848 The people of Martinez went into general strike against Governor Mora's new school law because they were not given a say in how their schools would be run. This led to a three-day battle between pro-government militia forces and 300+ strikers' homes while cannons pounded away at Fort Point above town (later converted into an airstrip). Aftermath: Over 200 dead & 100 wounded; total loss $423 On October 17th 1850 Ferdinand María Montero acquired 640 acres (2 km²) of land grant known as Rancho Rinconada grant number 5′6″ N 121° W (now part of Redwood City), about southeast of present day downtown Martinez along State Route 24 opposite Victoria National Wildlife Refuge boundary with Menlo Park separating it from that refuge boundary Another 1/4 acre (0·25 ha) became Rancho Rinconada grant number 6′9″ W 122°W (now part of Redwood City), just northeast corner lot now occupied by Palo Alto Library

In 1892, Amache Indians helped train local farmers to plant wheat on their ranchoBernardo land which led to rapid growth of the town of Martinez over the next few decades. By 1915, there were more than 100 businesses operating in Martinez with an estimated population of 3,000 people. During World War II, military personnel stationed at Camp Roberts located east of present-day Martinez made use of two large warehouses used for storage because no other facility could be found nearby for troop housing during the war years due to significant construction projects being undertaken nearby at Winton Field Army Airfield (now known as Edwards AFB). The warehouses were eventually converted into barracks for soldiers and are still standing today within walking distance of downtown Martinez. In 1957, Mayor Arturo Fraga sponsored legislation creating the city's first park which would later become State Park #1 within the city limits. In 1969, Mayor Arturo Fraga approved plans for redevelopment of much of downtown Martinez into mixed-use buildings including an arena/hall football stadium that would house both professional and semiprofessional sports teams; a library; commercial uses such as restaurants and stores; and residential developments with single-family homes becoming popular throughout California during this time period due to advancements in suburbia development across North America at this point in history.
