In 1892, Martinez became the first city in California to pass a gun control law. The ordinance required all handguns to be registered with the city, and made it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess a handgun without a license from an El Monte police officer.
Martinez, California is a city in the Central Valley of California. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the San Joaquin River and about 33 miles (53 km) northeast of Fresno. Martinez also includes some rural areas to the south and east. The first European to come to Martinez was José de Alvarado, who explored what is now central California in 1769–1770. In 1836, Antonio Vallejo founded a mission here after finding gold in central California. The city became part of Mexico City due to the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Mexican independence, Martinez became part of United States as part of Section 10b ofranch territory within Mexican state of Alta California. In 1881, when American farmers began farming land around Martinez, they built stores and homes near railroad tracks that connected Fresno with Stockton and Sacramento. This development led to increased business for businesses such as Wagon Wheel Saloon which had been started by James Hogg in 1875 on Main Street across from what is now Piedad Park Zoo. The saloon continued operating until Prohibition forced it out of business in 1920s; however it reopened during prohibition's repeal era under new management before going out of business again during World War II The post office opened here on December 12th 1879 under name "Alameda". On February 14th 1880, US Postmaster General James Kiefer issued an order ordering all mail delivered into Los Angeles through this route be delivered instead through San Francisco Bay because there would be no more private postmasters general following the end of war with Mexico The first post office building constructed here was a two-story brick structure designed by architect George Washington Smith that served as the main branch library from 1886 until 1912 In 1904, local school district superintendent Hiram Sanger organized a school system which included three elementary schools: one for white children called "Eastview" while black children were referred to as "Southside" or "Hollywood", one for Hispanics called "Nuestra Señora de los Dolores" while Japanese children were known as "Kipling Elementary School", and one for indigenous people called “Cuesta Blanca” which served primarily Native American students . In 1906 all these schools united under one roof with Msgrutero Brothers Academy becoming Southside High School functioning jointly with Hollywood Elementary School . A two story wood frame addition was added along Main Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue in 1908 serving as both an auditorium/theater and gymnasium . A much larger addition (4 stories high) was completed along First Avenue between Second Street and Fourth Street serving most notably as El Centro Library from 1927 until its closure in 1984 During prohibition years many businesses closed including Wagon Wheel Saloon but reopened afterwards Some current businesses located near old post office buildings include Bass Pro Shops , IGA Grocery Store , CAFÉ USA - Garcia's Pizza

Martinez, California is an incorporated city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 24,876 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Kern County and second most populous city in San Joaquin County after Fresno. Martinez sits on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about two-thirds of its surface area is within Kern County and one-third within San Joaquin County. Martinez's downtown core occupies a much smaller area than either Kern or SanJoaquin Counties combined. The first person to settle in Martinez was José Antonio Martínez who arrived there in 1835 from Spain with his family. In 1836, José María de la Cueva founded a small mission near present day Martinez as part of a larger effort to convert Native Americans to Christianity. This settlement failed and de la Cueva abandoned it soon after. The mission site was eventually taken over by Rancho Santiago de Atascadero which served as a training ground for Mexican soldiers during the Mexican War of Independence. After Mexico became an independent country, American settlers began arriving in what is now Martinez beginning with John Crain in 1846. By 1850, all but 1/3 of the town had been built when James Dillard purchased land from Francisco Gutierrez for $6 per acre (2¢ per sq ft). Dillard named his new town after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna - namesake of modern day Mexico City - because he felt that Santa Anna would be politically supportive of his efforts to develop this land into farmland suitable for crops and cattle production rather than just another frontier outpost likemany other towns across California at that time. Dillard's land holdings increased over time until he became one of California's largest landowners and developer with properties stretching from Monterey Bay to Yosemite National Park and parts of Arizona and Nevada His ranchos included portions of what are now: Kern, Imperial, Stanislaus counties; Bakersfield; Visalia; Stockton; Modesto; Merced; Oakhurst; Madera; Pershing Heights; Northridge
