In 1881, Martinez was incorporated as a city with a population of 2,500 people under the name San Bernardino City; it grew rapidly during the 1880s with many new businesses opening up including oil refineries and breweries. During World War II, Martinez became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America with over eighty percent of its buildings destroyed or damaged by bombing raids from 1942-1945; however only five families were killed as a result of bombings within the city limits alone (.pdf).
