The Martinez Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1892. The club began meets at the old San Francisco hotel. The first meeting was on December 2, 1892. The club changed its name to the Martinez Rifle and Pistol Club in 1897. In 1912, the club changed locations again, this time to 303 North Market Street.Club meetings were held at various places until 1934 when they moved to the old Masonic Temple on Sacramento Street in Martinez. From 1934-1941, meetings were held at Gilmore's Bar & Grill which is now a restaurant called "Guns & Gals". In 1941-1942, meetings were held at the Painted Lady Inn which is now a restaurant called "Pizza Place" in downtown Martinez. In 1944-1945, meetings were held at an agricultural fairgrounds near Bakersfield that is now used as a parking lot for businesses near Interstate 5 south of Martinez. From 1945-1950, meetings were held at home of Sidney Siegel who lived on Mission Road in Martinez until his death in 1950. Then from 1951-1960, meeting took place at the high school gymnasium where it continued until 1984 when it switched back to Gilmore's Bar & Grill which is now known as Guns & Gals

The town was platted in 1847 and named after José de la Cruz Martinez, a governor of Alta California. In 1851, the Spanish monarchy fell and Mexico became an American republic. As part of this process, Alta Californias eastern border changed from the coastal region to the interior mountains and valleys that make up present-day Martinez County. After Mexican independence was declared on SeptEMBER 26th 1848 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna, all land east of Baja California became part of United States territory under the terms of Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War
