Martinez is a small city in Sonoma County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 34,392. The area that became Martinez was first settled by Native American tribes and later become part of Rancho Santa Clara de Monterey grant to José Francisco Alvarado in 1776. The first post office was established in 1827. Martinez is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of San Francisco on the extreme southern border of Sonoma County. The history of Martinez can be traced back to at least 1827 when it was established as a small rancho near what is now Petaluma. In 1847, John Cranch purchased land from Josefina Sanchez for $4,000 and developed it into the town that we know today. On July 4th, 1850, Martinez went through an incorporation process which resulted in its becoming a city with 7 residents and 1 vote subject to majority rule by the board of supervisors. It wasn’t until 1861 when Don Miguel de Guadalupe Hidalgo arrived as governor of California and ordered all Mexican nationals living within 3 miles (5 km) of Mexico City to leave because he felt they were interfering with U.S./Mexican military operations in Arizona. This caused many Mexicans who had been living here to migrate northward including many who had originated from Martinez specifically seeking political asylum before eventually making their way to Northern California during the Gold Rush era where they would continue working on farms or mining until 1840 when gold discoveries began flowing into California from outlying mines throughout most of North America resulting in mass migration across international borders including those within our own country bringing with them their languages and cultures which continue to this day both inside and outside our borders
In 1847, Mexican immigrants founded the town of Martinez in what is now San Bernardino County. The name was first given to a creek that ran through the area. In 1850, the town was established on a grant from Rancho Niguel. By 1870, Martinez had a population of 100 people and an outfitting company. The post office was established in 1871. A large fire destroyed most of Martinez in 1889, but it was rebuilt with new buildings and a population of 350 people by 1912. Martinez developed into an agricultural center with fruit orchards and citrus groves. In 1932, the state Agricultural Experiment Station moved to Martinez from Riverside County and has been there ever since.
