It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and on the southern border of Oakland. Martinez lies in The East Bay district ofSan Francisco and is east from downtown San Francisco. A small town called Alta Vista developed near what is now Hearst Park along Peralta Street on University Avenue while other parts of Martinez grew around Mission Reach, an impoundment at the western end of San Pablo Bay used by both Ulysses S. Grant and John Drouin for military storage during World War II; this area became known as North Beach after Drouin moved his operations to North Beach Boulevard in nearby Alameda County when he sold his share in Commodore Perry’s navy ship USS 1853 (CBE) to United States Navy officer James Wickersham Richardson Jr.. In 1875, José Mariétz García founded a agricultural colony near present day Fremont with about fifty families from central Mexico following Juan Bautista Correa's recommendation that they do so because there was no available land elsewhere for them to farm given all the Native American occupancy within easily accessible settlements such as Stockton and Sacramento Counties northward beyond San Joaquin Valley Since these people could not speak English or know how to farm they relied largely upon Hispanic labor which often led to exploitation by European slaveowners until Anglo agricultural pioneers began arriving hereabouts about 1840 beginning with Captain George Hearn & Co.. Migrant workers came primarily from central Mexico but also Jalisco, Zacatecas and Veracruz states including some 300+ individuals who arrived December 16th 1798 aboard HMS "Eagle" commanded by Captained John Bowyer... many worked off shore harvesting crops on Point Reyes Peninsula before being taken across until they reached Angel Island where they disembarked January 1st 1800 having completed a journey that took over 1000 miles... Many returned home eventually reaching Guadalajara or Reynosa but many decided to stay behind including those captained by Bowyer who landed at Monterey May 6th 1800 continuing voyages upriver past Yerba Buena Cove thrupresent day Sonoma Strait before anchoring at Monterey Harbor September 25th 1800 having crossed Rodriguez Canal en route... From Monterey Harbor crew went ashore Lisbon Landing June 14th 1801 landing over 800 passengers/migrants under commandof Lieutenant James Cook RNVR under Lt Commander Richard O'Connell USN son Of Captains James Cook & Samuel Goldsmith USN on board HMS Erebus & HMS Terror On July 21st 1800 . During fall1802 Capt Cook sailed northward via Valdivia River into Gulf Of Fuca looking for maritime passage into Columbia Channel which he found but abandoned due lack of steamboats then returned homeOOK November 12th 1802 After two months sea voyage back resumed October 5thcember 2d1802Onboard HMS Erebus discovered Beale’s Comet Octavia 9pm Nov 22nd 1802 . This event convincedCaptain Cook to continue northwest search . The first school was built in Martinez in 1854 and eventually served as a high school until 1915 when it merged with Fresno State University. The post office opened at Martinez on November 6, 1850, and remained open until it was closed on December 12, 1912. In 1908–09, Martinez played host to the International Cotton Conference which included representatives from many countries including America's top cotton racketeers such as James Gaffney and John Davenport.
