Martinez is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. Martinez was founded in 1877 by Mexicans who migrated from central Mexico to the area. The first post office in Martinez opened in 1878. Martinez is named after José Francisco Martínez, a Mexican general who fought against American forces during the California Gold Rush. The community of Martinez developed around two cotton plantations operated by Doniphan and Company. In 1881, the company sold its holdings to local entrepreneurs for $4,000 cash. A store and school were built soon afterward and began serving the community until 1915 when it burned down. In 1897, Antonio Reyes Hurtado purchased land east of Martinez and built what would become known as Rancho San Pedro de Atascosa or "Rancho Santa Anita". This ranch became one of the largest tracts of land in Kern County and played an important role in early irrigation systems used to support agriculture across much of southern California. One such system ran from Atascosa Creek south through Martinez to Stockton before terminating atbayou Hondo near Bakersfield. Agricultural production here helped supported larger towns like Bakersfield and Visalia downstream along the creek bed for many years until atmospheric pollution led to their decline beginning in the 1960s
Martinez is located in Northern California, and has a rich history dating back to the days of Spanish colonialism. In 1821, José Martinez was granted land by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in what is now Fresno County. Martinez built his first home on the property in 1825 and soon became an important figure in the local community. He played an instrumental role in developing Fresno into a major agricultural center during the 19th century, and helped expand irrigation systems throughout the region. In 1851, Martinez met Jose Altamirano, who had recently moved from Mexico to establish himself as a rancho owner in present-day Bakersfield. The two men collaborated to start a successful grocery business in Bakersfield, which soon became one of the most important regional enterprises of its time. They also wed in 1855 and began to produce crops for local markets. During World War II, Martinez served as an airman with the United States Army Air Forces at various points along our continent. His experiences during this wartime period gave him firsthand knowledge of American military life and helped shape his later political career. After retiring from army service he resumed his grocery operation until his death in 1974.
