In 1936 Martinez had its own all- girls high school called Lady Bulldogs where future Bay City Councilwoman Loretta Sanchez attended classes beginning in 1934 until her graduation from high school in 1938; she went on to attend UC Berkeley and become one of the first two women elected onto the Berkeley City Council in 1955 In 1949 also it houses San Joaquin Valley College which offers degrees such as agriculture, business administration, environmental science and health sciences
When the United States acquired California in 1848, it was agreed that the land would be divided among its citizens in proportion to their population. The first census of California revealed that only 2% of the population lived in what is now Martinez County. By 1860, Martinez had a population of around 10,000 and by 1870, it had reached 30,000. The growth of Martinez coincided with the American Civil War and during that time there was an intense demand for goods brought down from Mexico by wagon caravan routes. This led to some development on the side of town such as a Mormon settlement near present-day downtown Martinez in 1868 which became known as "The Cottonwood Place." In 1892, Joseph Pulitzer founded The New York Times here and began reporting from Mexico City. At this time, newspapers were becoming an important factor in shaping Mexican public opinion throughout North America. As trade increased between the two countries and new technologies were developed here at home, Martinez grew even more prosperous. In 1916 Governor Jesse Ventura purchased land southeast of town for a new state prison which has since become one of Martinez's most popular tourist destinations.
