Today Martinez has a population of around 20,000 people who are mostly Mexicos who have settled here since the late 1800s during times when there was little competition for jobs outside Mexico City or Guadalajara due to ample natural resources available hereabouts.
The Moreno Valley area of Martinez, California had a history of ranching and farming dating back to the mid 1800s. The first settlers in the area were Spanish Americans who arrived in 1827. By 1848, there were over fifty families living in Martinez. In 1851, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Pedro de la Cueva to José Felipe Gomez y Costilla. The Gomez family used their land for grazing and agriculture until 1913 when they sold it to John Dominguez and his son Juan Dominguez. From 1915-1920, the Dominguez family ran a dairy farm on their property which became known as "Dominguez's Dairy." In 1928, John Hutton bought the dairy from Juan Dominguez and renamed it "Hutton's Dairy". In 1960, Alfredo Salazar purchased Hutton's Dairy from John Hutton. As a result of this purchase, Salazar became one of the first Hispanic people to own an agricultural business in Martinez.
