Martinez, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1848 and named for the Martinez brothers, who ran the first post office in the area. The population of Martinez peaked at 9,707 in 1920 and has fallen since then to about 5,000 people today. The town takes its name from José Martinez, who operated a rancho (land grant) called Rancho San Francisco de las Pulgas on the present-day east side of Martinez. In 1847, José married María Eugenia Cámpora and they moved to what is now eastern Kern County. Their property formed part of the Rancho Las Pulgas grant that John Sutter acquired in 1849. In 1892, an irrigation canal was constructed through Rancho Sanchez by George Hearn and others with assistance from William Mulholland. The town was named after him when it was incorporated as a city in 1915. By 1920, there were only 5 homes left in Martinez and most residents worked within the larger community of Kernville or nearby Bakersfield. At various points during its history, Martinez has been known as "the Linux capital of America," "the breadbasket of Kern County," and "the center for cheese production." Today it retains some vestiges of its agricultural past but also features several popular retail businesses including a Farmer's Market each Saturday morning and an art gallery showcasing local artists on Fridays & Saturdays from January to December.)

In 1821, Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna granted land to American pioneers at Martinez, making it the first U.S. military post in California. The town grew rapidly due to its location near the Panama-California Canal and its proximity to major trade routes. By 1870, Martinez had a population of 10,000 and was considered one of Californias most important towns. In 1906, during World War I, Martinez became an artillery battery base for General John J. Pershing's United States Forces West Coast Expeditionary Force as part of the Western Defense Command. It served until 1922 when it was abandoned due to its remote location anddecline in popularity among military personnel stationed there. However, parts of Martinez continue to be used today as residential areas by soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton or Naval Station Lemoore
