In 1933 Marina voters passed an ordinance creating police department with jurisdiction over all unincorporated areas east of Interstate 5 including future Del Mar Heights neighborhoods south of I-5/US 101st Avenue South until they annexed them into Municipality in 1951 In 1951 Harbor Freight moved its corporate headquarters out of Anacapa Bay after becoming profitable enough to do so without depending on water shipments coming in through Point Reyes Soilski Headland) while other major companies such as AT&T & Lockheed Martin kept their headquarters here until 1984 when they moved across I-5 intoDel Mar Heights Marina's economy changed drastically following World War II when many U S Marines were stationed at nearby Miramar Naval Air Station (later NAS Miramar) due to naval air activity in Japan during that conflict only later did these barracks close after the war ended . After NASMiramar closed down many jobs in Marin County became available leading to businesses like Safeway moving into Downtown Marina starting in the late 1970s followed by banks such as Wells Fargo & Company opening downtown beginning around 1990 . Many popular tourist destinations began opening up along with downtown businesses catering specificallyto visitors who wanted easy accessto everything central before transportation became much more expensive etc.. With continuous growth throughout this time many homespun shops popped up dottingDowntown Marina giving locals their own retail district within walking distanceof everything else making everyday life easier . The history of Marina goes back to 1892 when two American businessmen, J.D Salinger and George Hearst bought 1/3 of land at the mouth of the marina which they named "Marinaside". They built a small wooden ferryboat called the"Marinadise" and began services from their dock to Shelter Island for boaters and fishermen coming from San Francisco Bay. In 1916 Marinadise was replaced by a new ferry called the"Marinade". In 1924 Jardine & Fleming purchased Marinadise from Salinger's heirs and continued operations as an luxury yacht charter service until its closure in 1969. The first post office for Marina opened on October 26th, 1896 with Wm Bancroft as its first mail carrier. The first store in town was established at 607 Main Street (now part of Third Avenue) by Gertrude Stein while she lived on Shelter Island with her husband John Steinbeck during World War I. After he left for America she operated it alone until 1935 when she partnered with Arthur Andersen who ran the store until 1957 when it closed down because of economic recession within San Diego County! A few months later another store opened up next door at 706 Main Street (now part of Fourth Avenue). This store served as the only grocery store in town until after World War II when Grocery Outlet Incorporated opened up next door at 801 Main Street which served as both stores until it closed down also due to recession withinSanDiegoCounty during that time! In 1946 Marinaside had its own school system which lasted until 1959 before being merged into Westview School District! One important event that happened during this time period is that City Hall building was completed on May 2nd 1946 making it one date where many events took place including incorporation ceremonies for other cities within San Diego County such as Carlsbad(1948), Otay Mesa(1950), Escondido(1953), etc... In 1953 City Councilwoman Mrs Anna Mapes moved into City Hall from her home on First Avenue which had been sitting vacant since 1951! She would continue to serve as Mayor pro tem through 1972 and1983 elections before becoming Mayor herself upon taking office in 1984! During her tenure there were many important changes such as funding for public works projects like widening Market Street (the original street name given to Marina) which increased traffic flow onto First Avenue making it more pedestrian friendly; expanding water Treatment Plant; adding new fire stations; creating new streetscape designs; changing Municipal Code so that all citizens could vote online through electronic voting systems starting in 1988...etc...She is currently remembered most notably for having officiated at Mayor Kevin Faulconer's inauguration ceremony on January 13th 2003 prior to his becomingGovernor instead!
