In 1851, Russian whaling captain Fyodor Pavlov set up a small station here to harvest sperm whales off Point Reyes Station. By 1860, Pomona Landing had been renamed Marina after Russian Empress Marina Lvovna and its wharf became known as "Marina Heights." The name "Marina" arrived from Russia because it was close to Narva Castle—the medieval Estonian stronghold where Catherine II's forces besieged during her war with Sweden for control over Estonia—and Narva Strait enabled ships to enter and leave Russia regularly. In 1892 John Davenport opened a store at 4th and Townsend Streets that became the first hardware store west of the Rocky Mountains in North America. Davenport served as head clerk at Marine National Bank before opening his store on First Street adjacent to Fort Mason in 1896. In 1906 Hearst Corporation built an artificial reef offshore from Marina that still exist today as home plate marker #1 for both MLB's Oakland Athletics (now called Golden State Warriors) and NBA's LA Lakers playing their games at Angel Stadium Of Anaheim which replaced Municipal Pier 6 located nearby at Pier 41 until 2003 when it closed due to corrosion problems caused by high levels of salt water intrusion into local soil
