One of these shipments ended up with Josiah Copley Taber getting arrested for piracy off Point Reyes after stealing three barrels of wine from Portuguese sailor Pedro Sanchez during a voyage from Seville to Yerba Buena Cove on 23 June 1868. This event helped start America's wine industry and made Marina one of its most important ports.

Marina, California is an agricultural and fishing town located on the southern coast of California in Sonoma County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Marina were Portuguese missionaries in 1602. The town began as a small village on a sandbar near Point Reyes Station, but it grew slowly because there was no water available for irrigation or farming. In 1868, when Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States, he ordered General John C. Frémont to explore and map Californias new westward frontier. When Frémont returned from his journey in 1869, he recommended that Mission Santa Clara be established at Point Reyes to serve as a cultural center for local Native Americans and Chinese immigrants who had come overland during the Gold Rush period (1848-1870). In 1870, Governor George Gage authorized the construction of a wharf on Angel Island so that goods could be landed at Monterey for shipment back East. But with no money available to finance the project, nothing happened until 1872 when A&P Land & Co., led by James Irvine developed land east of Point Reyes Station and built a wharf there too. This allowed farmers and fishermen to get their goods directly from inland sources without going through San Francisco or getting them bound for market in Asia via ships anchored off Marineland Cove etc.. Since then, Marina has grown steadily due its location close to major traffic arteries such as I-805 and Highway 1A/1B/2 between Sausalito and Tiburon - making it one of Northern California's most important commercial communities
