Marina, California is a city located in Marin County, California on the San Francisco Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, its population was 34,153. The City of Marina was incorporated on February 18, 1898. The first European to see and visit what is now Marina was Gaspar de Portolà on USS "Discovery" on October 17, 1769. He named the site "San Diego" after his hometown of San Diego in southern Spain. It wasn't until 1840 that a permanent settlement was made at what is now Marina by transient sailors from Spanish America who had been landed there by Captain James Cook during his final voyage of discovery around Cape Horn. They called their new town Point Reyes because Robert Ewing Point Robinson had named it this in 1839 while he was acting governor of Alameda County for General José Joaquin Balboa. In 1853, Russian sailor Ivan Petrovich Blinov came ashore at Point Reyes and built a small cabin before sailing back home to Russia the next day with six barrels of oil he'd Discovery had discovered off the coast of Africa. Blinov's find was followed soon thereafter by others including John Hargrave aboard HMS Beagle which found oil seeps along shoreline near where today'sPoint Reyes Light Battleground stands just offshore from Marine Park Boulevard and beneath Interstate 5 southbound lanes as well as across Admiralty Way from Del Mar Park amenities northbound lanes between I-5 and US 101Providence Road about midway through today'sMarina In 1896 when City Manager Arthur Kesselman became aware that most people living near San Francisco were coming to work in San Francisco but not seeing any opportunity to build a city here they decided to incorporation themselves into San Francisco making Marina an enclave within San Francisco proper numbering only 15 citizens out of a population then over 100000 (the total population according to2010 census). On February 18th 1898 City Council adopted Resolution No 8 asking Mayor George Seidel if he would allow them to annex land east sideof Market Street extending all the way down past First Street beyond present day Naval Base East fence line so they could build some type of public works garage etc... Mayor Seidel finally granted annexation pending further study! In 1915 when World War I started America got busy building Navy yards at Richmond Naval Ammunition Depot & Mare Island Naval Air Station creating thousands more jobs for locals & giving rise also to another name for our growingCity; Harbor Gateway which still exists today

In 1847, the first post office in Marina was opened by John G. Hodges and his wife, Fannie. The name of the town was then change to Marina for a period of two years. In 1850, a store and hotel were built on First Street in Marina During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many wealthy Californians used Marina as their summer home. One such resident was Augustus Saint-Gaudens who entertained dignitaries at his private palazzo there from 1899-1902
