On July 14, 1846, while exploring Santa Cruz Island off the coast of Marin County he sighted what may have been a small ranch house which he named Rancho del Carmen after himself and his friend Don José de Carpinteria y Valdés who had purchased it from Nicolas-Jacques Morin On September 26, 1849 an agreement was made between Spain and America under which Mexico agreed not to challenge U.S.-Mexican boundary lines that had been drawn without consulting America. This event marked the start of a period of peace and cooperation between America and Mexico that would last for more than two centuries In 1853 gasoline became available for automobiles in Marin County so people began driving into town instead of walking or taking boat rides which gave rise to the name "Marina" which means 'town near water'. In 1865 electric streetlights were installed in Marina so people could get their work done during night hours without having to walk around with lanterns . By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in Marina In 1917 when World War I started American commercial shipping stopped at Pier 21 because they didn't want warships coming into port against international law . After WWI most commercial shipping left until 1957 when oil prices went up and Marin began anew as an agricultural center In 1978 Marina voters passed Proposition 13 creating zoned development areas which prohibited single family homes from being built within 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) of any public beach or swimming area

Marina, California is a small town in the East Bay region of San Francisco County, California. The population was 3,746 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and is adjacent to Sausalito and Tiburon. The name Marina comes from Mission Dolores which stood near what is now Marina City. A ferry service connects Marina with Sausalito and Tiburon. In 1849, prospectors discovered gold in what is now Marin County and named their new settlement after Saint Helena in Egypt because that was where they found it first. In 1851, Sacramento businessman Gideon Welles donated land to establish a mission on Castro Street in what is now downtown Marina. The Mission Dolores Adobe was built as part of this effort and remains an important part of the town's history today. In 1906, the United States entered World War I and Congress passed the National Defense Act which provided for military training center at Camp Pendleton (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord). The USS Marlin arrived at Pier 39 opposite Earle Bruce International Airport on November 11th, 1916 to begin Accepting Shipping Of Ammunition there for use by both warring nations. Other vessels used during WWI included: RMS Lusitania ( sunk by German U-boats off Newfoundland ), SS Americana ( sunk by Japanese torpedo boats off Leyte )and USS Marblehead ( lost Patrol boat patrol duty off Philippines ). Since its inception as a port town, Marina has seen many changes including becoming an incorporated city in 1957; annexing parts of Sausalito in 1962; being placed under municipal jurisdiction when Tiburon annexed it in 1978; becoming a full member city with voting rights in 1990; and being reincorporated as an unincorporated community once again on July 1st, 2004
