It is located on the sound of Marin County's bay and includes part of Sausalito Peninsula. The City of Marina was founded in 1872 by brothers Alvord and Orson Bayard Miller as a small fishing village on the site of an earlier Pueblo settlement. In 1906, when Marin County was established, Marina became a part of it. In 1966 the city annexed parts of neighboring San Rafael and Novato. In 1972, Marina voters passed a bond measure to build more than $30 million in new roads and bridges over the sound to improve access to jobs in San Francisco and other cities. This project included widening Utopia Boulevard from its present four-lane width to six lanes for heavy traffic while also improving safety for drivers and pedestrians along what had been one of the most dangerous areas in Marin County. The project cost $41 million and was completed in 1979. The City has made many strides since then including comprehensive planning that resulted in downtown being redesigned as a pedestrian-friendly walkable center with restaurants, art galleries, retailers and movie theaters; creating new parks like Pacific Heights Park with stunning views of Sausalito Bay; increasing access to public transportation through miles-long MARTA lines connecting downtown with various neighborhoods; developing world-renowned vineyards within walking distance; redeveloping buildings on Point Reyes Station into mixed use developments featuring residences/retail space/professional offices/nightlife venues etc.; creating several high quality performing arts venues such as Pier 39 Arts Center (formerly known as Oakland Repertory Theatre) which opened its doors July 1st 2009 after more than 10 years languishing neglected outside owner control - becoming one of Northern California's top cultural destinations; bringing fiber optic cable into town from BART stations just across Point Reyes Station - completing an extensive infrastructure development that has transformed this once sleepy little town into one of Silicon Valley's leading technology clusters

The name "Marina" comes from Russian traders who called it "Matrina." In 1836, member of the United States Army General James K. Polk established a military post named Fort Point at Marina to protect American shipping on the Pacific Coast and prevent British ships from raiding U.S. shipping lanes off the coast of California. In 1851, when most of Alameda County became part of Oakland, Marina became an independent town and developed as a port for goods being shipped out to Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in Northern California. In 1903, a group of businessmen founded what would become Google Inc., which had its first meeting in Marina Municipal Building on Shoreline Boulevard near White Sands Bay. At this time Google was based out of Menlo Park and had only 1 employee - Sergey Brin - while their offices were located in Mountain View, CA (then known as West Grove). The first headquarters building for Google inside Silicon Valley still stands today: One Market Place (now leased to Facebook). In 1969, after years of planning and construction by Mayor George Moscone and City Councilmember Harvey Milk (the first openly gay mayor in America), Marina got its own city hall with room for up to 350 residents – making it one of only two cities in America then with such an establishment; other examples include San Francisco's Castro Street district ({which also includes Potrero Hill}) and New York City's Greenwich Village ({which includes Chelsea}. After more than 30 years living under one roof, during which time much has changed around here - includingwise sea levels - Marina finally gained its independence as an incorporated city on November 3rd, 1995 via referendum vote by voters residing within its boundaries!
