Marina, California is a small town located in San Francisco Bay. The name was given to the community by Commodore John D. Sloat during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The area now known as Marina was first populated by Native Americans who hunted and fished in the local waters. In 1851, an American doctor named George Augustus Earle built a small cabin on Piers 15 and 16 near what is now Marina. In 1863, Mayor James Wills of San Francisco purchased land at Point Reyes National Seashore and developed it into a small town called "Marinas". On July 14, 1894, Mayor Joseph Sertoli designated Marina as a city charter site for San Francisco Bay Area residents to vote on. The first mayor of Marina was Amedee Sozzini with help from his friend Luigi Pirrone. In 1923, the state of California acquired 8 square miles (21 square km) ofinsula from Marin County through eminent domain and set out to build Interstate 5 through it. To avoid disrupting local life and commerce, Governor Cesar Chavez ordered that no new housing be built in or adjacent to Marina until all residents had been moved out of their homes within two years; this order was later softened to 10 years due to public outcry against high-rise development across downtownSan Francisco towards then-Marinasouth endearing name for Downtown getting its start because most people there lived above ground level.] The economic decline of the late 1960s led many businesses in downtownSan Franciscoto move out into nearby neighborhoods such as Hunters Pointand Treasure Islandbut not Marina which continuedBeneaththe inflated surface levelsof those areas]. The town developed rapidly and by 1870, it had over 1,000 residents. By 1892, there were 2,500 residents and by 1907 the population had reached 10,000 people. The community experienced rapid growth due to its location on an oceanfront property that made it easy to grow crops and ship goods to markets in San Francisco and elsewhere. However, during World War II the town was destroyed by a Japanese bombing raid.
