As part of efforts to improve transportation access to Marin County during World War II, Marina developed a network of dirt roads that served as a key supply line for the war effort. After the war ended, development picked up again with new homes being built along Second Street between First and Third Avenues until 2006 when plans were submitted to move the community into an all-new development on Fourth Avenue near Interstate Highway system (I-5) exit 8B. The vote failed with only 10 percent support despite opposition from many local residents who argued that they had invested time and money in developing this district without receiving any benefits from the proposed redevelopment project
Marina was founded by Spanish traders in 1769. The first post office opened in 1852. In 1907, the city of Marina incorporated and began to grow rapidly. In 1912, the city became a part of the City of San Francisco. The Ports of Marin County were created in 1974 and are now one of the largest ports authority in Northern California.
