Manteca, California is a small town in the Kern County of southern California. It is located on the banks of the Manteca River and about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Bakersfield. Manteca's population was 9,848 as of the 2010 census. The name "Manteca" means "place where the water is clear." The first humans to live in what is now Manteca were the Ohlone Indians. They arrived about 12,000 years ago and populated much of southern Calaveras County before leaving in waves for other parts of North America. After they left, plants and animals started to grow and spread through this area which led to development. In 1859, prospectors discovered gold deposits at Manteca Creek near today's town limits. Mining began soon after, but it was not until 1863 that a local creek became known as "Mantecan" because so many miners had built their huts along its banks. The first post office was established in 1865; it was renamed "Manteca" in honour of Governor Edward Dutton Morton who donated land for it. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses operating here and 2 newspapers published daily; one each from Bakersfield and Lancaster counties. A railroad reached Manteca by 1885, connecting Bakersfield with Stockton and Sacramento; this helped increase trade hereabouts as well as stimulate economic growth throughout Kern County during the late 19th century and into the early 20th century when agriculture became more important than mining or manufacturing. In 1917 a new shopping center called The Mall opened on portions of what are now Grand Avenue east of US Route 395 between US Route 508 (Humboldt Street) south/west to Interstate 5 (Flamingo Road). This plaza hosted several large retailers including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Macy's Inc., Kmart Company, Overstock Inc., Sears Canada Ltd., etc.; among others numerous restaurants such as Hooters International Inc., Myron's Tavern & Grill, Taco Bell Corp., Dairy Queen Restaurants Incorporated - later Eagle Rock Pizza Corporation - Super 8 Motel - Sprint Corporation - Jamba Juicebar - Applebees Restaurant Group plc.- eventually closed by 2008 due to competition from fast food restaurants chains within minutes' walk or less via drive-through windows everywhere throughout Southern California
