Captain John Sutter had discovered gold nearNW Sacramento in 1848, and soon thereafter many people began arrive in search of this valuable mineral wealth. By 1850, there were over 50 families living in the town of Manteca proper and another dozen or so scattered throughout rural areas surrounding it. In 1851, Jeptha Bates became the first white man to sell water rights to what would eventually become Manteca County when he formed a partnership with General William Richardson to purchase 2 million acre feet (0 hectare) from Rancho San Francisco de las Vegas (later known as Tejon Ranch). This Purchase gave rise to one of ranching's most significant moments in county history as it marked both an advance for cattle raisers and a new era for agricultural production within California – thus contributing significantly to the growth and prosperityof Mendocino County during that period. Manteca quickly became one of America's leading wine-growing communities due to its fertile soil and numerous vineyards dating back to at least 1880 – making it one of only a handful U.S.-based wine appellations still operating today.
