The Manteca Valley is located in the southeastern part of California and it covers an area of about 325 square miles. The valley takes its name from the Manteca Creek which flows through it. At a elevation of 4,653 feet, Manteca is one of the highest valleys in California. It is also one of the most agricultural areas in the state. The valley was first settled by Native Americans and then by Latinos who arrived during the early 20th century. In 1911, a group of Mexicans built a small cabin in what is now known as the Old Rancho San Pablo Cemetery near Interstate 5 and State Route 287. They named their settlement after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had been governor of Mexico at that time. The first permanent settler in Manteca was José Gomez who arrived on May 10, 1912. He erected a adobe home on what is now Main Street called “Gomez’s Rancho”. Gomez died in 1917 but his heirs continued to live there until 1934 when they sold it to Héctor Cámpora and his wife Laura López y Cámpora for $5,000 cash plus 12 acres (6 ha) of land adjacent to their rancho which they later developed into townsite (Manteca). By 1923 there were 7 people living in town with all except two being Mexican immigrants working as farmhands or laborers on local farmssteads along with some residents owning businesses such as hardware stores or restaurants that catered to Mexican workers from around San Francisco County during this period In 1924 an act was passed authorizing county officials to build roads through residential territory without property owners’ consent thus enabling development within town boundaries . This paved way for wider settlement including farmers and laborers living outside city limits while also creating new social tensions between Anglo-Saxon middle class residents and poorer Mexicans whose only source of income came from agriculture

Manteca, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Merced metropolitan area. Manteca is known for its apple orchards and dairy farms. Manteca was founded in 1872 by Elisha Swayne and his wife Abigail Howard as a rural post office called "Haven" on the site of what is now Hacienda Heights Elementary School. In 1895, the post office was renamed Manteca after Congressman John A. Daly of jurisdiction in that year's election. The first store opened in 1898 and named "The Miner". The two were later joined by their brother-in-law Augustus Kelley as proprietors of what became known as the Kelley Store and Dairy which opened on Main Street in 1901 under that name with an addition to the east side in 1912 near where today's Barnes Road intersects with I-5 (then US 101). The Wanesha family acquired land northwest of town from ranchers around 1915 and began developing it into what is now Manteca Ranch State Park comprising 5,000 acres () including much of present-day Manteca, which they purchased from local farmers who had leased it back over time to various interests including Stanford University students protesting World War I traffic congestion on campus; United States Steel Corporation; Southern Pacific Railroad; and others. In 1923 Robert Drysdale donated 1 million acres (500 km2) northeast of Manteca to become Muir Woods National Monument (). With this gift came hopes for reducing sprawl along Interstate 5 through most of Kern County while preserving open space adjacent toMuir Woods National Monument(). In defiance of state law governing national monuments, developers built apartment complexes (the largest being Job Corps), supermarkets, auto dealerships etc., without first acquiring local zoning permission or appealing to elected officials for help nullifying any opposition from citizens concerned about increased traffic density within city limits (). Development continued unchecked until 1978 when then-Governor Ronald Reagan signed legislation creating Muir Woods National Monument (), effective February 24, 1980 (). Angered at this act by environmentalists who felt their creation had been unlawfullyILlegally accomplished through state government neglect (), many residents boycotted supermarket construction until pressure forced change under then- Supervisor Don Armstrong (); although some development restarted following rehabilitation efforts spearheaded by Mayor Bob Fitchett . From 1988 until 2000 much business activity took place inside Muir Woods National Monument but outside the park boundary due to new U.S.–Mexico Border fence ()); nevertheless park visitation skyrocketed because people could explore miles upon miles undeveloped inside protected boundaries without fear of citations or arrest

Manteca is located in the Central Valley of California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The town was first settled in 1847 by Anglo-American pioneers and has since been a cultural and economic center for the region. In recent years, Manteca has become known for its wine production, which is one of the most important industries in the town. The population of Manteca was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000, making it one of the most populous towns within driving distance of Los Angeles. The town began as a small frontier settlement named Kineasucka on June 1, 1847 by John Sutter and his brother David Sutter, who had come down from Sacramento County. They named their new community after their father's home village in Canada—Kineasucka being an aboriginal word meaning "salt water beach." At first there were only a few settlers living in Kineasucka; however, within a year or so other pioneers had also arrived and built homes. By 1850 there were over 20 people living hereabouts. In 1853 Captain William Halsey sailed upriver from Monterey Bay with his expedition to explore what lay beyond Point Conception (now El Centro). He sighted Mount Whitney on November 17th while sailing upriver from San Pablo Bay and called Manteca "the Most Ancient Hill on Earth" because he thought it might be older than even Gibraltar! From this discovery came Manteca's nickname: "The Gate City". One early resident captured Captain Halsey's excitement when he reported back that he had seen nothing but beautiful country for 350 miles (560 kilometers) along both banks of the river below El Centro until he reached Manteca! In 1860 Governor Pico made an agreement with Emigrant Party members George Cogan and Daniel Webster to lease 640 acres (2 km²) at Estero Creek near present-day downtown Manteca for $1 per acre (0.50 m²). This land became known as Rancho La Brea Adobe (); later it was renamed Rancho Santa Anita (). Although not quite 2 square miles ([km²]), these ranchos would have a significant impact on development in Manteca because they were adjacent to where Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico stood until 1925 and across 3 streets from where First Baptist Church now stands. Later that year Captain John Folsom surveyed part of what is now Highland Park; this area became known as Folsom Heights (). Folsom also surveyed parts of today's Compton Boulevard between Sierra Madre Avenue (then bounded by Brush Street northward), State Road 210 westward to Dana Avenue southward, Hollywood Boulevard eastward to Lankershim Boulevard (), Torrance Boulevard () northward past Crystal Springs Drive (), then southwest past Magnolia Drive (); these surveys are now part of Sunset Strip (). On July 14th 1861 Captain Folsom submitted his report entitled “Survey No 5” which included sketches depicting future developments including plans for two schools and irrigation systems for agriculture beyond Yorba Linda creek (). These surveys helped spur decisions about building infrastructure such as roads around Rancho La Brea Adobe including Ventura Freeway (), Interstate 5 (), Alameda Street ()) today’s Brentwood Avenue ())and Templeton Avenue ()); ultimately these surveys led to construction beginning in 1862 on what is now Ventura Boulevard between Broadway/Alameda Street()and residential areas northeast along Templeton Ave(). To date this freeway system remains one of LA’s most arterial highways with more than 2 million vehicles passing through it each day! Manteca was first populated by the Ohlone people in the late Pleistocene. The area now known as Manteca was part of Rancho San Vicente de las Flores, granted to Juan Bautista de Anza on December 27, 1777. Upon his death in 1821, it passed through succession to his two daughters and her husband, Manuel Nieto. The town of Manteca was founded on October 25, 1851 by John Fenton and other settlers from nearby Carpentaria. The town plat was filed February 8, 1852. It consisted of a single block bounded by Second Street on the north, First Street on the east, and Indian Road on the south. The first post office in Manteca opened in March 1850. In 1865-66 Jno Waddell added a store and hotel to Manteca. On November 1, 1868 an act passed by the California Legislature incorporated the city of Manteca with a population of 582 residents; Waddell had retained ownership of both buildings until his death in 1870. In 1916-17 Edwin Gentry served as mayor for one year; he became City Marshal after that term ended. He also served as editor of "The Manteca News". Mayor Gentry's wife Marie died suddenly at home while pregnant with their third child; Gentry took care of her funeral arrangements and then left for Europe before she could be buried there also (he returned safely just days before her death). An act dated November 16, 1928 designated Main Street within downtown Manteca as Municipal Boulevard in honor of Mayor Edwin Gentry who had made such an impact upon local development during his time as mayor
