In 1984, two people died after shots were fired into a home near the city center.

Manteca, California is a town in Madera County, California, United States. The population was 2,561 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Spanish word "mantequilla" meaning "to bake bread." Manteca first appeared on public records in 1859. The first post office in Manteca opened in 1861 and was named for José Gomez de la Torre, who also founded Rancho Viejo (now part of Fresno). The town was platted in 1865 by Major Fenton Hughes and Captain Nathaniel E. Parsons as a way to consolidate several small farming communities that had formed around Chico Creek. In 1868 the townsite was donated by Drury Coleman to the Methodist Episcopal Church because it experienced heavy drought during his previous term as pastor of Moraga Heights Presbyterian church. In 1870s mining began along Chico Creek and soon sentiment grew among locals to build a new railhead on dam site due to abundant gold coins found there. On November 12th 1870, when city commissioners met to decide what should be done with surplus land east of Antelope Road they decided unanimously that Manteca would have an depot for trains coming into Yreka from outlying areas so a store could be built and infrastructure put in place for trade with other counties including Butte County which then had its own depot across from today’s BART station where passengers can transfer between BART trains and buses going into downtown San Francisco or Palo Alto or Menlo Park or Redwood City or Deer Valley etc., instead of having to go down Antelope Road through rural Madera County! A spur line been built west from Yreka mainline starting at present day Siskiyou Depot prizing access up Bastion Hill Rd past Geyserville until it reached Indian Wells about 4 miles north then paralleling old Hwy 120 until it reached present day US 101 just south of exit 116 off I-5 near Redding while another spur went east reaching today's Altamont Dam before turning northwest crossing overRYDER CREEK into Mendocino County! This system allowed farmers all around these parts easier access to markets without having to travel far away each time something new came up with valuable minerals such as gold! The first train stop here were at Alamitos Lake (Atascadero) which served not only Manteca but also Anacapa Island just north of downtown Yreka; Pajaro Lake about 5 miles south; Clear Lake about 10 miles northeast; Gardiner Lakes about 15 miles southeast; Umpqua Lakes about 20 miles northeast; Modoc Lake about 25 miles southwest and finally Weldon Dam on Russian River serving many surrounding villages including Crescent City near Bolsa Vista CA . Today you can still see evidence of this early railroad infrastructure like tracks leading down into Coyote Pass located behind Utilities Department building next door

The town was platted in 1886 and chartered as a city on July 12, 1907. The population grew rapidly after World War I and reached 120,000 by 1930. Manteca became a full-timebeds city with an established infrastructure in 1938 and continued to grow until the late 1990s when it began to decline due to population loss, economic recession, and new development within its borders.
