Manteca, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. Manteca is located on the west side of Kern County and about 17 miles (27 km) east of Bakersfield. It lies on the Kern River and east of the San Joaquin Valley. The first white person to live in Manteca was James Wetherbee who settled there in 1847. A post office called Manteca was established in 1851, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1916. Manteca has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 years ago according to archaeological evidence discovered near the town site. The first confirmed mention of Manteca occurs circa 1280 AD when it is mentioned as "Nemetec" or "New Nemetec". In 1853 an ad for a store called "Gardener's Store" appeared in the Bakersfield Californian newspaper which sold goods such as hay, flour and beef from land grant holders around Bakersfield and Tulare Counties including Manteca. In 1865 two brothers named Hockaday started a grocery store with eight barrels of oil each that became one of the longest-operating businesses anywhere in America until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic decline. In 1876 prospectors found gold near where Manteca now stands while working off several claims nearby on what is now known as Hwy 508. After being disappointed with their finds they returned home but struck rich again when they prospected new territory just south of Manteca Creek between 1880–1882 which yielded more gold than any other stretch across Nevada and central California combined! This led to increased activity around here which caused many local residents to immigrate over time; some settling permanently while others moving periodically throughout their lifetimes like those aforementioned brothers did over sixty times!
