Manteca is a town located in the Mojave Desert of California, about 113 miles (190 km) east of Los Angeles and 228 miles (355 km) north of Phoenix. The population was 8,914 at the 2010 census. Manteca is the seat of Mono County. The first people to live in what is now Manteca were the Yuma Band of Mohawk Indians who arrived there in 1847 after migrating from upstate New York. The town was named for General José Joaquín de Márquez y Menéndez de Cisneros, who served as Governor of California during the Mexican-American War and president of Mexico following its conclusion. In 1892, Italian Americans founded a small community called Villanueva on Rancho Santa Anita near present day Manteca Boulevard and National Route 101. In 1912, when it became part of the newly created city of Los Angeles, Manteca had a population of 496 residents. However, by 1920 it had shrunk to just 99 residents due to increasing industrialization and suburban growth around it within Los Angeles County. In 1951, when Interstate 10 was realigned through southern California, portions including Manteca were moved to its new corridor immediately outside downtown LASVille while other portions were placed within southern California along I-10's original route across Orange County and into Riverside County. The town's only stop on I-10 before moving further out was at Exit 179A/Rancho Tejon where motorists could buy gasoline products from an adjacent Chevron station until 1984 when that station closed down completely due to environmental concerns about oil spills in nearby Kern River Valley oil fields which continue to this day------------------------------------------------------------

Manteca is a small community located in the south central corner of Kern County, California. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. Manteca has been inhabited by Yokuts Indians for over three hundred years. In 1851, the United States government acquired land in what is now Manteca as part of the Rancho San Joaquin Mexican land grant. The name "Manteca" came from an Apache Indian word meaning "place where there is plenty of water." The first post office called Manteca (later shortened to "Manteca") was established in 1853. A log cabin and homestead were built here in 1854 by John Capps and wife Elizabeth Capps, who named it Fort Manton after General Antonio López de Santa Anna's headquarters near modern-day Bakersfield, California. In 1860, the town site was surveyed and platted by Wm Hurlbut under the name of Spring Valley. It took until 1865 for construction of a railroad to begin through here; it became known as "the magic line." On July 1, 1886, parts of Kern County were annexed into Los Angeles County; Manteca absorbed most of its neighbors within two weeks but carried on with its own governance until January 14, 1889 when a convention voted to establish a new county government based onala values instead of ranchocracy.
