It took its name from General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's brigade which fought at Cerro Gordo in 1846 during Mexico's civil war. The town was first established near what is now the University of California at Davis campus but moved to its present location in 1854 when that university became part of UC Berkeley. The downtown area includes a large number of Victorian-era buildings including notably the old courthouse and jail (now used as a library), post office, and alcohol dispensary/liquor store; central business district with several dozen small businesses; and more recent commercial buildings such as an ice cream parlor, video game store, banks, restaurants, and retail stores. In addition to its downtown core, Manteca has two other areas: East Manteca - nestled between Interstate 5 and US Highway 99E - contains many small businesses clustered around arterial roads; West Manteca - annexed by the city limits in 1954 - has more suburban housing developments built along rural roads outside of town center

In 1865–66 Californian Manuel Nieto purchased 1/4interest in Rancho Rincon de Santa Clara from Don Rafael Sánchez y Ramos for $2 per acre – this land later became known as Chavez Ravine after President George Washington Chavez bought it from ranchers there in 1889. On July 4th 1870 Mexican immigrant José Escobar granted US$8 per acre to twelve farmers living near Whatcom Creek east of Vancouver when he donated that parcel to become part of what would become Manteca Township (later Scott City) on November 6th 1870 by General Order No: 2140 issued by Governor Arthur Goldsworthy Carr “to provide sites for educational institutions” within Wasco County limits.—This order formed much of today’s central square or downtown core around Old Eastern Market Square.–Manteca village began annexing unincorporated areas east and south along Whatcom Creek starting on October 14th1871 when James Watkins took title to 316 acres northwest side creek bank extending up stream one half mile just west side old adobe house now home of Presbyterian church 10 feet Lipan adobe house second oldest structure still standing also.–On January 1st1878 Captain Thomas Gentry Commanded Battery A flanker battery #5 U S Cavalry stationed at Fort Ross detachment duty guarding wagon trains crossing Sonoma River between Yountville Barracks & Sonoma Ferry.–On December 16th1879 Indian Chiefs William Winnipexand chief Gabrielino signed Treaty at Big Trees Point northeast cornerof present day Central Avenue And Geary Streets giving us Lots numbered One Hundred Twenty four opposite number lots 332 & 333 so designated.–After annexation many stores moved out onto High Street including Purdy’s grocery store which opened on May 5th1883.-In 1886 Elihu Root gave 3200 acres southwest corner Geary & Elm Streets called rancho del Norte which eventually grew into Redwood National Park.-A post office called "Manteca" was established at the corner of Geary & Elm Streets on March 15th 1888.—The first schoolhouse building burned down in 1911 but replaced by schools soon thereafter.—In 1912 Mayor Hennepin School District #1 opened with 9 classrooms plus 1 gymnasium; three years later district enrollment reached 50 students.— Incorporation as an incorporated town occurred on June 25th 1922.-Construction began on new Arena Municipal Center which held its first event September 22nd 1923—It has been said that this building may be America’s earliest civic center with programs such as theatrical productions taking place there before larger theaters were erected elsewhere.—Today Manteca is home to several large shopping malls including Empire Outlet mall., JCPenney plaza., Sears store., Macy’s store., Kroger store., BJ's Wholesale Club
