Manteca has a long history as one of the most important agricultural communities in Kern County. The town was founded by Michael Jansen in 1884 after he bought Rancho de las Pulgas from Manuel Nieto for $1,000 cash and 150 acres (64 ha). In 1887 Jansen built his first home here and within three years had developed what would become Manteca into a thriving agricultural community with over 100 farmsteads and 1,500 head of cattle or pigs. The early residents played an active role in local politics and served on many committees including those responsible for building the courthouse and governance of the new village. Some notable members of this early community include Michael Jansen himself who served as Mayor from 1893 to 1895; Hildreth Axton who served as Treasurer from 1897 to 1899; John Safford who represented District 3 on the Kern County Board from 1905 to 1911; Lillie Baldridge who was clerk of district court from 1907 to 1912; Harry Wiman who represented District 5 on the Kern County Board from 1916 to 1919; Clifton Ketchum who served as mayor pro tem from 1937 until his death in 1942; Mrs. Anna Cappuccilliwidener Fenton who ran for office four times (1907-1909-1913-1915) before she eventually became property manager for Kane’s Furniture Store which she continued until her death in 1984 A number of businesses that grew out of agriculture such as Kane’s Furniture Store (now known as Lowe’s), Peddlehoege Farm & Market (now known as Jack Nicklaus Golf Course), Big John’s Drugstore (now known as Walgreens Pharmacy), First Christian Church (founded 1865), etc., continue operations today including Just Puppies pet food store (founded 1977), Antonelli Family Grocery store (founded 1945), Kipling Farms produce stand (founded 1973), Centennial Park Golf Course(opened 1925), etc.—all providing healthy foods for locals and tourists alike along with recreation opportunities like baseball games at locally owned Shea Stadium or soccer matches at AT&T Park . In recent decades there have been other major developments associated with Manteca such as its becoming home to Apple Inc.' headquarters Campus Campus Inn located just off I-5 across from town center while also housing numerous businesses such as Dell Computer Corporation's SBUX Headquarters Building opened in 2007 adjacent to Interstate 5 Occidental Boulevard;; CenturyLink Field - now used by both MLB teams San Francisco Giants/Oakland Athletics and San Diego Padres - opened in 1998 adjacent Interstate 580.; Mohawk Pizza - currently open inside Penryn United Methodist Church - began serving pizza here back in 1978.; Lion's Den BBQ restaurant - started serving quality BBQ here back in 1997 . Manteca is located in the Peninsular Ranges of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and occupies an area of 34 square miles (88 square kilometers). The first people to live in what is now Manteca were Native Americans who built villages near present-day Fillmore and Springdale. These villages are thought to have been established around 1795 by Komo and other Paiute groups from Northern California. In 1847, Rancho San Joaquin de la Luz was sold to John Sutter for $1 million. He named it after his brother Antonio Basile Sutter, Governor of Sacramento County at the time. Sutter began building a new city on the site in 1851 including land that would later become Manteca. It became known as Sutterville because of its founder's connection to John Sutter, one of Northern California's most prominent entrepreneurs. The city grew rapidly due to industry and agriculture; however, World War II led to decline in these sectors and Manteca experienced economic stagnation until the late 1990s when it regained some prosperity through Manufacturing jobs related to computers and software development across various industries such as health care/medical services/pharmaceuticals etc., plastics manufacturing (largely used in car manufacturing), online retailing/the internet among others. In recent years there has been an increase in immigration which has brought more diversity into this small town with many residents being born here or have ancestry from here spanning all over North America. There are also a few professional athletes who have come from Manteca including American football quarterback Colin Kaepernick (who played for Southern Cal) as well as basketball player Julius Erving from Princeton University
